Updated reference standard strengthens nationally consistent plant pest surveillance

The Subcommittee on National Plant Health Surveillance has published SNPHS Reference Standard No. 1, Version 25, endorsed in July 2026.

The updated standard introduces a nationally consistent framework for developing Technical Reference Guides for plant pest surveillance. It includes clearer governance and review processes, standardised surveillance terminology, stronger evidence and quality requirements, and improved links with diagnostic and surveillance data standards. 

These changes will support the development of practical, scientifically robust guidance for early detection, delimiting, monitoring and pest status determination across Australia’s plant health surveillance system.
